Historians are not sure as to the origin of gambling. It is believed that civilizations in every part of the world independent of each other had games that pertain to a game of chance. There are pieces of evidence suggesting games resembling gambling existing in ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome and China.
The first modern gambling house was built in Venice Italy in 1638. The Ridotto was made under the aegis of the Great Council of Venice to regulate the act of gambling during the festive season. It was closed down in 1774 after it was identified as corrupting the locals.
