What is the provenance of the term Casino?

Casino

Casino, as a term, is of Italian provenance. It has come from ‘Casa’ which translates to a house or villa. Gradually, the term became popular and public buildings where people gathered for pleasurable activities. Such places were built in a larger villa or palazzo in Italy where civic functions were organized. To the surprise of many, not all buildings labelled as casinos provide gambling services such as The Catalina Casino, on Santa Catalina Island, California. Gambling had been outlawed in California by the time the building was completed. If the meaning of the term casino is considered in German and Spanish, it means a mess exclusively used by military officers.
